SCLWU to join fellow Smith Unions at Solidarity Fair

Friday, September 27

3:00-6:00 p.m.

Chapin Lawn (outside Campus Center)

On Friday, September 27, an historic coalition of six established unions, including SCLWU, will unite on the Smith College campus for the first-ever Solidarity Fair! Unions will celebrate wins, strategize, and build collective power, while also informing the public of the challenges faced at the bargaining table.

The fair represents the largest display of joint union power at Smith College in collective memory and, in addition to SCLWU, will include:

  • Fort Hill Teachers Association (FHTA-UAW 2232), which includes preschool educators at Fort Hill and is the most recent union established on campus (election was on 9/25!)

  • Dining and Housekeeping Workers (SEIU Local 211)

  • Facilities Management (SEIU Local 263)

  • United Smith Student Workers (OPEIU Local 153)

  • Smith College Resident Life Collective (UFCW Local 1459)

With union organizing stronger than ever on campus, management continues to dismiss concerns, stall the implementation of more equitable labor practices, and delay bargaining. SCLWU is excited to unite with other unions to form a single organizing coalition to demand the fair treatment and good faith negotiations that all workers deserve.

The coalition plans to use this time to deepen ties with one another, demonstrate unity in the face of Smith's delay tactics, and hold the college accountable for its own purported values. Now is the time for Smith to invest in the people who make college operations possible!

SCLWU will have informational leaflets, buttons, stickers, and union-made candy at the fair, and pizza will also be available to those who attend.
